In honor of my ancestor, Benjamin Butler Harris, who traveled from Texas to California in the 1849 gold rush via the southern route, and wrote about the trip and life in the mining camps in his book, "The Gila Trail."

I imagine the miners square dancing to fiddle and banjo to celebrate the Fourth, likely with firecrackers bigger than any we might buy today.
